Back In The Lab

After a busy morning at Runge Nature Center we headed back to the Science Lab on Stephens College campus.  The elementary students were eager to dissect owl pellets-especially after learning so much about owls this morning.

As they entered the lab, they had goggles, tools for dissecting, their science journals, instructions and owl pellets.

They were able to dig right in! They learned to be very careful as they dug through the pellet.  If they went too fast the bones would break.  Most of our students found pieces of mice and voles.  Some found more then one skull-sometimes four!

What a great way to end our week.  We wish everyone a wonderful Fall break and we look forward to seeing you the following week!

Runge Nature Center

Preschool and Elementary had a very exciting Friday morning at the Runge Nature Center! We went to a demonstration about all of the different types of owls that live in Missouri. We learned many facts about Great Horned owls, Barn owls, Barred owls, Screech owls, and Snowy owls. Pictured below are two of our friends Michael and Savannah attempting to catch prey using only their ears, just like a Barn owl.

We heard the sounds that many of these owls make and got to pass around feathers, claws, skulls and owl pellets.

After the demonstration we wandered through the center checking out all of the exhibits.

We saw frogs, snakes, snapping turtles, salamanders, deer, fish and much more. After enjoying our snack we bundled up in our winter gear to hike through the outdoor nature trails. Many thanks to Ms. Becky (our owl demonstration leader), and to parents who were able to join us on our field trip. We will finish our day in the science lab dissecting owl pellets!

Here are a few of the preschool students eagerly awaiting our field trip.

Once we arrived, the preschool students went on a scavenger hunt through the nature exhibit.  Each child had a checklist with various animals and were able to look for them in the exhibit.

November in Wonderland

The Columbia Police Department came into the classroom with the K-9 unit. Roff, the large German Shepard pictured above, showed us a demonstration of how he catches the bad guys on the job. Roff used his well trained nose to sniff out the criminal box. The students had many questions about Roff and how he lives as a working dog.

20131121-132644.jpgThis week has been all about bear exploration in Wonderland. We are learning about how bears survive the rough conditions in the wilderness, especially through the cold winter.

We learned that bears hibernate in caves, sometimes with their cubs, during the cold winter months.

A member of Ms. Violet’s band came into the preschool for a special visit. Since we are learning about the different groups of instruments (percussion, string, brass, etc.) she thought it would be a great experience for the students to hear a new sound.

They performed one of their songs together and students sat back and enjoyed a private concert! The song was about chasing dreams and never giving up! 20131121-132706.jpg20131121-132734.jpg

Share day Friday’s are going great! The children are getting into the swing of things and learning how to ask great questions to our presenters. Our students are doing a great job sharing their item with their classmates as well.

Good work presenters, keep it coming!

Water is fun to explore! Students enjoyed mixing, pouring, blowing bubbles, stirring potions, rushing water down the marble tracks, adding color, making water pipes, and creating lid soup, just to name a few ways to have fun.

The water table was a common shared interest for many students and it brought them together in a cooperative learning environment.

It’s Already Thursday?

The elementary classroom has been so busy this week we forgot to share what has been happening…

In literacy our younger students have explored punctuation by finding examples in books.  They created sentences and then played a game using question marks and exclamation points.

20131121-123808.jpg

Some students have worked with the well loved book, “No David” to better comprehend stories as they read.  They learned how to retell and then use
language found in the story. Students are acquiring storytelling language and
phrases by having stories read and shared with them.  They then used a graphic
organizer to retell the story, “No David”.

As a whole class we started another Author Study of Eric Carle.  He  uses animals in his books which correlates with our Animal Study in the afternoon.  The students watched how he creates his illustrations and were inspired by his art studio!  They are now interested in creating their own writers studio.

20131121-123817.jpg

To end our week, we compared Eric Carle to Steve Jenkins (another author we studied-both use animals to inspire writing) with a Venn Diagram.

20131121-123836.jpg

They realized there are a lot of similarities between the two authors!

When we come back from Fall Break (December 2nd) we will continue our Author Study of Eric Carle.  The students will get to paint using tissue paper!

Musical Guest

Ms. Violet brought a friend and a new instrument today. We learned the difference in sounds between a guitar and cello. Making music together is easy!

Special Guest Speaker

Today, preschool had a local Veterinarian stop by to talk about being an animal doctor. He showed us x-rays of different animals and reptiles. This was a great way to end the day! Thank you Dr. Meyers and everyone at Horton Animal Hospital Northeast!
